What is a Fringe Theatre Festival?
Fringe theatre is theatre that is experimental in style or subject matter. The Fringe started life when eight theatre companies turned up uninvited to the inaugural Edinburgh International Festival in 1947. Originally, these groups referred to themselves as the "Festival Adjuncts" and were also referred to as the "semi-official" festival. In London, the fringe are small-scale theatres, many of them located above pubs, and the equivalent to New York's Off-Off-Broadway theatres and Europe's "free theater" groups.
