Explore North Coast and the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center as co-sponsors invites the public to their Lecture Series featuring Dr. Sean Craig a professor and marine ecologist at HSU. Dr. Craig’s talk will be on jelly fish and nudibranchs. Dr Craig’s talk is timely as our members are currently seeing massive swarms of Sea Nettle Jelly Fish in the waters off Trinidad. His talk will be followed by ENC members presenting a slide show on their recent kayak expedition to God’s Pocket Marine Provincial Park. God’s Pocket is a set of small islands off the north coast of Vancouver Island. This area has been called one of the finest marine reserves in the world. The lecture is scheduled for Monday, November 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921 Waterfront Drive, Eureka. Admission is free.

Dr. Craig's Bio: Dr Sean Craig teaches introductory zoology, invertebrate zoology, advanced invertebrate biology, and intertidal ecology. His research ranges from the evolutionary ecology of colonial marine invertebrates and the nudibranchs that feed upon them to applied problems, such as how invasive marine bryozoans have adapted a resistance to copper in ship hull paints and how to track and conserve marine protected areas including rocky coasts and kelp beds.

Art Talk with Monica Coyne Blacksmith Artist

Join us at the Morris Graves Museum of Art on Sunday, November 4th at 2:00pm for the opportunity to connect with Monica Coyne, local artist and blacksmith.

“I began as an industrial artist. Experience and skill with metal greatly influences my art. I am trained as a blacksmith to shape steel into tools and connections that will serve an efficient end. I have made a name for myself in the blacksmithing community by forging forms that contradict the weight of the material and the prudential practice of the craft. The strength of steel offers me the opportunity to experiment with balance and asymmetry. Its versatility provides the ability to create surprising forms. I have always been fascinated by the idea that the shape of something can create an emotion in people. I can follow the vein of iron and carbon. I can take it to a place of function, to a gate, a tool, a joint. Or I can follow it where it wants to go. Or I can do both. This is what I am trying to do. Let the metal move. Explore the forms it takes from steel bar to skin, bone and water.” -Coyne

Learn more about Monica Coyne’s art and process during Art Talk at the Morris Graves Museum of Art on Sunday, November 4th at 2:00pm!

The Morris Graves Museum of Art, located at 636 F Street, Eureka is open to the public noon-5p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults; $2 for seniors (age 65 and over), military veterans, and students with ID; children 17 and under free; Families with an EBT Card and valid ID receive free admission through the Museums for All initiative, Museum members are free. Admission is always free for everyone on the first Saturday of every month, including First Saturday Night Arts Alive!, 6-9 p.m. and Mini Masters at the MGMA.
